An earlier blog (27th December 2007 : Dolce Donum) about alternative lodgings featuring an abandoned ship and a tree house, seems to have struck a chord. Its impossible to say if the respondents are romantics, or broken-hearted – or whether, like me, they just like to keep a low profile (I sometimes send myself to sleep by imagining I’m a happy little creature in a sunlit rockpool). It also reminds me of discussions I’ve had with Mr Creighton about the best way to go missing from the world; surely by checking into one of those airport hotels. Either way, it seems to be a blog that has plumbed into something important.
Well, here’s a few more good ones for you to consider . This would put an end to drop-in visitors.

But I suspect this ghost town accomodation is more likely to be in my price range.

When recently filling in the ‘musical influences’ section on my MySpace page, I found myself adding negative influences as well. In some ways I think that tells more about musical taste than saying you like The Beatles, Bob Dylan etc like everyone else.
The Who sprang immediately to mind for my list of anti-influences. I wouldn’t call myself an authority but everything I’ve heard (including interviews c/o Pete Townsend) have only helped cement my dislike. And I’m wary of actual living, breathing people who like The Who because it seems so,… wrong. So I was shocked today to discover an otherwise respected friend who turns out to be a devoted Who lover.
He impressed me with his explanation of the sordid love affair – more or less saying he liked them BECAUSE they were so out of their depth. He said he was “a sucker for rock’s genuine overreachers – tragically flawed big thinkers.” He even directed me to the the greek legend of Sisyphus. It was good stuff and a new perspective for me to apply in any number of other important fields I wrestle with.
If only The Who hadn’t been so richly rewarded (and Townsend trumpeting about his genius all the time). It just seems unfair to all us talented people.
No – I’ve always preferred the more classical victory of talent over impossible odds: Elton John for example.
but back to the ‘anti-influences’ . The music we hate does so much to shape our destiny’s. I have Jethro Tull to thank for keeping the flute from my recordings etc
This is worth arguing over for while surely – and gives us the chance to use the new comment button below.
