29th June 2006 : New Album “Doomsday Piano” complete
I take a deep breath as a new phase begins for King Curly and we set ourselves to tour nationally with a new album called ‘Doomsday Piano’.
The making of this record has been very rewarding – in particular the collaboration with my good friend Mr Dan Creighton whose beautiful writing inspired me to write songs again. I’m listening to the record now and am pleased to hear the energy that Zoe, John, Elmo, Ben and James have brought to the music. They all seemed happy to oblige when I announced my intention to use a collection of homemade instruments for the recordings – and while its could be argued that many of them sounded like shit, somehow the sum of them added up to something far more dear to me than would have been had we delivered a slick pop rendition of the songs. It seemed to me from the start that these little stories about vengeful zombies and runaway pianos needed to be played on something different – the other motivation was that I desperately wanted to hobble my conservatorium educated band. They dealt with it brilliantly. Elmo of course didn’t need to be hobbled – he somehow just sounds like Elmo – even when he’s handed a stick and an elastic band. God bless him for that.
