I have neglected my King Curly blog. We are now in Melbourne about to open a 12 day season of our play ‘Van Park’ at The Chapel off Chapel. Steve Kilbey is firing on all cylinders, JPY is solid as a rock and the mood amongst the cast and band is nervous but very excited.

Funeral In New Orleans

As a Christmas gift I have posted a free download of our cover of a great favourite of mine, Dan’s and also John’s.

FUNERAL IN NEW ORLEANS

It was written by an American named Danny Cohen who might have been labelled Punk in his day. He is amongst the finest songwriters alive but I dont think he has much to show for it.

We recorded the song as part of the Night Parrots sessions but it wasn’t included on the album only because it didn’t seem to fit – being a cover.

I wonder if Danny will ever listen to it and then write to say he likes it. I doubt it since he seems pretty cosmic nowadays – from what little information there is about him on the web.

Ive sold a few copies of Night Parrots (it has gone triple platinum if 10 sales now qualifies as platinum which may be true) but Im guessing not many people are likely to have of heard it yet. I know Lucky Oceans has played it at length on his excellent program The Planet @ Radio National. we will wait and see what comes in with no publicity. In spite of all the logic of the universe, I am hoping i will be coaxed out of the mountains by popular demand. Then it would be good to play with the band again! but otherwise who could be #*%ked.

A few people have asked me what I have been doing with myself. Well, Ive been lucky enough to have been taken in by a team of mud & straw builders who allow me to do what I like – so its a bit like writing a song. very enjoyable. I do the mud bits but some of the other bits as well. here’s a few photos

Night Parrots

Dear Friends,
The new cds ‘Night Parrots’ have arrived; here is a link to the press release. i ‘m trying to think of ways to publicise it without spending any money – impossible sadly: Ive already had to post about 20 out just to all the people who are on it. Anyway it’s a good record so just buy it and if you are friendly with any music industry powerbrokers (particularly overseas) let us know because that’s about the extent of our cunning publicity strategy.

When we got together to record these songs we warmed up with a few numbers first – a couple of covers and an original. And while they didnt have a place on the new album we thought they were worth putting up as free downloads. Ill put this old favourite up first – Dan had been asking us to do a version of it for some time.

Van Park on tour 2011

Well, it seemed to go well and we’ve been asked by the Seymour Theatre to play a season because it sold out every night at the Fringe. How strange it was watching the audience. I learnt that comedy simply doesnt exist in the absence of laughter so there can be no confusion how things are going. I felt like people were abit tense to begin with – no doubt due to the extremely low PC rating of the dialogue, but they eventually loosened up and were dancing foolishly on stage by the end. we all enjoyed ourselves very much so we are planning to tour Van PArk around abit in 2011..Here’s a bit of what it looked like.
